Medicine that asks
“why,” not just “what.”

Aaron Occhino, LAc, is a licensed acupuncturist, Chinese herbal medicine practitioner, and founder of The Functional Point. He earned his Bachelor's degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from Arizona State University before completing his Master's degree in Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine at the Academy of Oriental Medicine at Austin.

Aaron's path into medicine began through his own personal health challenges and a desire to better understand why so many people continue to struggle despite seeking care from multiple providers. His experiences led him to explore nutrition, lifestyle medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and other approaches that emphasize living in greater alignment with nature and supporting the body's innate ability to heal, adapt, and thrive.

Prior to entering healthcare, Aaron spent years working in the hospitality industry, where he developed a deep appreciation for service, connection, and the importance of making people feel heard. That experience continues to shape his clinical approach today. He believes healing begins with listening carefully, asking thoughtful questions, and taking the time to understand each person's unique story.

Aaron combines principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine, including Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture, functional and integrative health, nutrition, and lifestyle medicine to help clients address chronic and unresolved health concerns. His areas of focus include gastrointestinal disorders, Long COVID, immune dysfunction, environmental and biotoxin-related illness, neurological symptoms, autoimmune conditions, hormonal imbalances, stress and anxiety, pain management, sports injuries, and complex chronic health issues.

Completing acupuncture school during the COVID-19 pandemic profoundly influenced Aaron's perspective on healthcare. Witnessing the challenges faced by both patients and providers strengthened his commitment to transparency, critical thinking, and patient-centered care. He is passionate about helping individuals make sense of their symptoms, navigate an increasingly complex healthcare landscape, and take an active role in their own health and well-being.

Through The Functional Point, Aaron's mission is simple: to help people better understand their health, restore resilience, and create the conditions that allow the body to heal and thrive.

The Story

After years noticing that patients weren't getting better on standard protocols — labs coming back “normal” while people still felt terrible — Aaron went deep into functional medicine, classical Chinese herbalism, and systems biology.

The result is a practice that doesn't suppress symptoms — it finds and fixes root causes, blending the ancient wisdom of Traditional Chinese Medicine with modern functional diagnostics.

Aaron now works with patients nationwide via telehealth for functional medicine and TCM herbal consults, and sees acupuncture patients in-person locally.
